Position Purpose:
The VP of Veterinary Medicine plays a critical leadership role in driving excellence across Bideawee's veterinary services, overseeing the delivery of compassionate, high-quality medical care for privately owned pets, as well as animals in our Adoption Center and foster network. As a member of the senior management team, this position is responsible for aligning veterinary operations with the organization's mission, enhancing medical protocols, and ensuring compliance with all applicable regulations. The VP of Veterinary Medicine collaborates with hospital managers and staff to achieve financial goals, improve operational efficiency, and cultivate a culture rooted in service, respect, and animal welfare. The VP of Veterinary Medicine is expected to be on-site at both our Wantagh and NYC facility.
This is a full-time position with an annual salary of $200,000.
Responsibilities/Duties/Functions/Tasks:
Specific Responsibilities
- Ensure that the best quality, compassionate veterinary care is provided to private client pets, Adoption Center animals, and foster animals;
- Maximize the profitability of the Animal Hospitals;
- Create a culture of service and excellence so that employees, clients, volunteers and the animals are treated with respect and dignity;
- Act as a public spokesperson on the role and relevance of veterinary medicine;
- As a member of the senior management team, provide informed and objective ideas to maximize the mission of the organization;
- Create and evaluate systems to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of the various facilities located throughout the NY major metropolitan area;
- Remain current on trends, ideas, and new developments in the field;
- Willing to speak with major and potential donors and provide medical data for inclusion in grant proposals;
- Periodic presentations and reports to the Board of Directors, staff, and community.
Business Operations
- Works with Veterinary staff and Hospital Managers to achieve financial goals;
- Implements revenue enhancement and expense reduction programs as necessary;
- Ensures compliance with all federal, state, municipal, environmental and veterinary regulations;
- Facilitates communication between the sites regarding programs and standards of care;
- Mediates personnel matters by working with the HR Department and the Hospital Managers;
- Ensures proper training of medical employees at all locations;
- Establishes medical protocols and works collaboratively with the Adoption Center staff on care for resident animals;
- Collaborates with other departments to achieve organizational goals.
Community Relations & Marketing
- Promotes Bideawee's brand image to the community at-large;
- Integrates services with community needs and public relations opportunities;
- Ensures Bideawee's customer service standards are met;
- Works with the Marketing Department in the development of multi-channel marketing campaigns;
- Work collaboratively with Community Initiatives team to provide medical care for the community.
Personnel
- Develops opportunities for in-house and off-site continuing education opportunities for the teams;
- Provides oversight and leadership to the veterinary staff;
- Participate in the hiring of veterinary staff;
- Works with Hospital Mangers to conduct performance evaluations, motivate and evaluate personnel;
- Develops and implements policies and protocols to ensure high quality, highly productive, client and animal-centered medical practice.
Veterinary Medical Care
- Develops and implements policies and protocols according to the Bideawee Standards of Care, Companion Animal Care Standards Act, and the AVMA Standards of Care;
- Oversees equipment maintenance and purchases;
- Ensures proper inventory and controlled substance logs.
Requirements
Bideawee performs a highly significant, needed and complicated service to its various communities of animal owners and lovers of animals. The successful candidate will be able to balance the needs of the private-client hospital, intake facility, and in-shelter and foster population. In addition, they will understand the complexities of nonprofit charitable organizations, the role of the board, and the responsibility of the organization to the public. To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:
- 5-7 years of veterinary practice management experience with a financially viable animal hospital and/or shelter;
- DVM license required;
- Experience in an animal sheltering facility preferred.
