Animal Behavior Coordinator
Position Purpose:
The Behavior Coordinator will be responsible for performing behavior evaluations, behavior modification, and behavior rounds on Bideawee’s in house animals. They will provide behavior training for staff and volunteers. The Behavior Coordinator will also participate in pre or post-adoption behavior support.
This is a part-time position with a salary of $25/hr for 2 days a week.
Responsibilities:
Behavior modification and training
- Adhere to all protocols set forth by the Behavior Department, including behavior modification and training procedures, enrichment, animal handling
- Conduct assigned behavior modification sessions for specified animals (both cats and dogs) and enter treatment notes into shelter software
- Conduct playgroups, recording play styles and other behavior notes into shelter software
- Assist the Behavior Manager in evaluating and updating protocols and compliance to protocols as necessary
- Prepare high value treats for training and monitor stock
- Participate in weekly treatment meetings with the Behavior Manager
- Work closely with Adoption Staff and volunteers to ensure proper handling of all animals in accordance with protocols outlined by Behavior Department
- Train behavior volunteers to conduct behavior modification and training sessions as assigned
Behavior Assessments
- Evaluate dogs within 24−72 hours of arrival when possible
- Help train other staff to conduct behavior assessments as needed, and monitor evaluations to ensure they are being done properly
- Enter completed evaluations into shelter software by end of day
Admin
- Enter all concerns and incidents reported by volunteers into shelter software in accordance with Behavior Incident Reporting Protocol
- Manage behavior binder or any other information set out for staff and volunteers, in accordance with Behavior Manager’s preference
- Ensure that color code stickers always remain up to date on kennel cards
- Run weekly reports to monitor Behavior Checks in shelter software as requested by the Behavior Manager and follow up to discuss further plans based on animals who are flagged
- Run other reports and monitor other aspects of animals and behavior when requested by Behavior Manager
- Communicate to staff as needed when new procedures are put in place to help refresh on protocols as needed, and to introduce new methods or training plans as determined by Behavior Manager
Adoption Center Support
- Provide behavior counseling to fosters and adopters pre- and post-adoption as needed, and give input to help coach staff and foster team as needed
- Assist in the low stress handling of animals designated as “behavior cases” or “staff only” when needed (e.g. movement for cleaning, feeding)
- Help train new staff members on how to properly handle animals as needed
Qualifications
- Completed Fear Free Shelter Program
- Excellent verbal and written communication
- Basic experience with Microsoft Office products and familiarity with shelter software, particularly Shelterluv
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with attention to detail and retention of information
- Willingness to learn about animal behavior and training and to attend continuing education opportunities
- Experience conducting behavior evaluations
- Completion of a minimum of 3 hours of continuing education
